Vacation’s over and now it’s time to leave we’ve got to go home and get back to our routines we sure will miss it here palm trees and ocean the sea breeze in the air life moving in slow motion Vacation’s over but if we never said goodbye this would be just another place instead of paradise Let’s gather up our things and pack this suitcase this tiny shampoo bottle will fit in with your toothpaste I’d better shake this sand out from my swim trunks our beach towel’s not yet dry but we need to pack it up Vacation’s over but if we never said goodbye this would be just another place instead of paradise I hope you ate enough this morning at the buffet but if you’re hungry later They’ll give us pretzels on the plane maybe we’ll come back within a few years till then we’ll have our memories picture and souvenirs Vacation’s over but if we never said goodbye this would be just another place instead of paradise Vacation’s over but if we never said goodbye this would be just another place instead of paradise

I think I’ll write a short song today to summarize succinctly everything I have to say compress all of my thoughts into a clearly crafted plot I think I’ll write a short song today tell me did you happen to know? the average song on the radio is three minutes and a half so swift in its attack I think I’ll write a short song today It may never be my perfect masterpiece but somehow someway I’m gonna write a short song today I’ve got so many points I could address I’ve got so much emotion exploding in my chest but i could lose your focus with a seven minute opus I think I’ll write a short song today Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge followed by the chorus once again three minutes and a half to make you smile or cry or laugh I think I’ll write a short song today It may never be my perfect masterpiece but somehow someway I’m gonna write a short song today sometimes more is less when there’s so much to express the abridged version’s the best that I can do sometimes more is less when there’s so much to express so I’ll just sing this last refrain for you it may never be my perfect masterpiece but somehow someway I’m gonna write a short song today I’m gonna write a short song today I’m gonna write a short song today

We’ve all got parts to play in this script this script of love and life we’ve come here today, two hearts to commit joined together as a man and wife but you’re looking anxious, you’re starting to sweat as you try to loosen your tie that smile on your face has since turned and left tell me that it’s just classic stage fright there’s only one vow you’re asked to make to have and to hold for the rest of your days so lift up your eyes and look at my face Because this is the part where you say I do so don’t turn away when I’m looking at you there’s a room full of people waiting on your next move but the doubt on your face tells me we’ve a conversation long overdue Now everything’s moving in slow motion scenes and the room is starting to spin You’re turning stage right, I hear myself scream Never should’ve played out like this Were pressures too much, expectations too high? did you just collapse under the weight? so many questions and I’m asking why? was it for the fear of sealing your fate? I’ve just got one question left to ask Who’s really hiding behind your mask? when at the last moment you’re not up for the task Because this is the part where you say i do so don’t turn away when I’m looking at you there’s a room full of people waiting on your next move but the doubt on your face tells me we’ve a conversation long overdue I gave you the cue but you didn't take it I gave you my heart only for you to break it Tell me this act is just improvisation Because this is the part where you say I do so don’t turn away when I’m looking at you there’s a room full of people waiting on your next move but the doubt on your face tells me yeah the doubt on your face tells me the doubt on your face tells me we’re through

She gets out of bed round 5:15 starts up a fire to heat up her beans lays a couple tortillas on an old comal before she walks to the bus that takes her out of town She arrives for roll call by 7 o’clock finds a seat at her usual spot she hears the steady hum of the sewing machines she’s been working at the factory since she turned 14 She’s just another Maria in the maquila just another spoke on the wheel she’s just another Maria nobody sees her just another spoke on the wheel The products are cheap but the labor is cheaper she won’t put up a fight so they’re inclined to keep her she knows better than to open her mouth like what happened to Gladys, they can just throw her out and there’s no time for laughter or conversations with the other girls around her work station no time for classes, no time for boys if she hopes to keep herself employed She’s just another Maria in the maquila just another spoke on the wheel she’s just another Maria nobody sees her just another spoke on the wheel today’s work order just came in American flag on a cotton blend and she doesn't know how to write or read the words on the front that say Land of the Free the red, white, and blue, familiar design made for export, priced at $6.99 words on the back she doesn't know what they say it’s a screen print slogan of God Bless the USA She’s just another Maria in the maquila just another spoke on the wheel she’s just another Maria nobody sees her just another spoke on the just another spoke on the just another spoke on the wheel

If you’d never worn that dress I never would have stared and if you’d never looked my way I never would have dared to act on these longings and let my feelings show but if we never try how will we ever know? if you want some conversation or maybe something more if you want some company please don't walk out that door just stay for this dance with me while the music’s soft and slow if we never try how will we ever know? How will we ever know if there’s something between us How will we ever know if it’s more than a spark How will we ever know if this could last forever How will we ever know until you’re here in my arms If you want a prince charming to bring you rosas each night if you want someone with money these things all fade with time but what i can offer is a love that can grow and if we never try how will we ever know? if you’re looking for someone who is true to his word if your heart has been broken I won’t be like boys from before maybe you’re cautious but even so if we never try how will we ever know? How will we ever know if there’s something between us How will we ever know if it’s more than a spark How will we ever know if this could last forever How will we ever know? How will we ever know if there’s something between us How will we ever know if it’s more than a spark How will we ever know if this could last forever How will we ever know until you’re here in my arms til you’re here in my arms til you’re here in my arms here in my arms

about

If We Never Try is a collection of some of my favorite songs I’ve written over the past few years. Some songs are more autobiographical while other songs are written from the perspective of other people. You'll find that the tone here is sometimes playful and sometimes pensive, and the music and songwriting style are a bit different from my last EP. I hope you may find something in these songs that brings back a memory, puts a smile on your face, or makes you think.
